workers say president obama could end it all, fix their paycheck problem issuing an executive order and not waiting for congress to raise the minimum wage. all over the country the fast food workers say they need $15 an hour beyond the $7.25 wage to get by. they say that the $200 billion industry can afford it. but the national restaurant association says they could actually be endangering their own jobs. they wouldn't be able to pay everyone $15 an hour and not everyone could qualify for jobs that pay $15 an hour. the protesters expected to be all over the country today although we got the list this morning, several sites throughout california, and some states are taking action dealing with their own minimum wage, at least four states planning to vote on it next year. >> thank you. in fact, while california has one of the highest minimum wages in the country a push to $15 would attack businesses here. california's minimum wage is $8 an hour and thanks to a recent bill signed by governor jerry brown it will go up to $9 an hour next year, $10 an hour in 2016. here in the bay area oak

at or below the minimum wage of seven dollars -- $7.25 last year. president obama is calling for a hike to about $10 per hour. that is what he calls a broad growth agenda. airport workers and fast food workers and to nurse assistants and retail salespeople who work their tails off. they are still living at or are above poverty. that is why it is well past the time to raise a minimum wage that in real terms right now is lower -- >> fast food workers in 100 cities across the country made a strike yesterday. they earn about nine dollars per hour. they want the minimum increased to $15 per hour. i want to bring in columbia university professor -- who focuses on labor inequality issues. i want to start with you. restaurant workers are calling for $15 per hour. don't they run the risk that mcdonald's or wendy's will cut the workforce? >> that is the myth. we have plenty of studies recently that show there are negligible employment effects when you raise the minimum wage. when you think about it, take the current employees -- $7.25 per hour. a big mac is three dollars. they could actually buy

this summer. it seemed like yesterday they got a big boost from president obama. >> last month, voters in new jersey decided to become the 20th state to raise theirs even higher. yesterday, the d.c. council voted to do it, too. i agree with those voters. i agree with those voters and i'm going to keep pushing until we get a higher minimum wage for hard working americans across the internet. >> president obama supports a $10.10 on minimum wage. certainly never mind $7.25. any sort of rates for their workers would end up getting passed down to the consumer in the way of higher prices for food. there are no hard numbers on this, but a burger would go anywhere from $3 to $3.50. that's the big debate. how big of a deal is that if the price of a burger goes up 50 cents? a lot of labor experts say it's not that big of a deal because a lot of these fast food workers use about $7 billion in social services a year. if they need less in those social services, you'll pay less into those social services, basically raising the bottom raises the whole. the protests are scheduled to start around 11:30. we'll
